Underground Tunnel Complex London
Underground Tunnel Complex London
The tunnels were built in the late 1930’s in anticipation of WW2, but not completed until the end of the Blitz. They were to accommodate up to 8000 people in the event of an attack. They were kept as possible nuclear shelters through the 1950’s, gradually being handed over to BT.
Ian Fleming is said to have worked there and the complex inspired his vison for Q Branch in the James Bond novels.
Some of the tunnels are directly under the tube – so noisy, but others (the larger ones) are generally quiet.
